Just Start with One Thing

Do you have a hard time taking action?

Like— do you struggle to do the things you know will make your life better?

I’m raising my hand high on this one.

I’m love feeling inspired. I love thinking about what I need to change to live a better life. I love envisioning big dreams in my future.

The problem is not that I love to be inspired and dream.

The problem is that I often stop there.

I honestly didn’t even really realize this was my tendency until I watched a speech by self-help guru Tony Robbins which was entirely focused on how neglecting to take action in our lives is why so many of us remain stuck.

Tony says: “In life, lots of people know what to do, but few people actually do what they know. Knowing is not enough! You must take action.”

Knowing is not enough. You must take action.

What I have found in the years since I began taking my self-care practice seriously is the importance of just doing something.

The first step is to just do one thing.  Focus on one thing. And make sure it is a thing you can take action on.

By the way, it’s great to have a larger vision for your life - but for the purpose of getting you to take action in your life, I want you to break it down to something simple.

Your “one thing” could be anything.  Make a list of some of the things you wish you were doing and then pick the easiest one. Or pick the one that is most appealing to you.

If your schedule is constricted, pick the one you can do within the current limits of your schedule.

Choosing one thing to take action on in your life is so crucial for a couple of reasons.

One— you need to show yourself that you are willing to take action.  This is especially important if you feel you’ve been stuck for awhile.

Second – choosing just one thing feels more manageable, which will make it a lot more likely you’ll actually DO IT!

Choosing that one thing can give you some success relatively quickly which can inspire you to take action in other areas of your life. But you don’t have to worry about that, yet. Just focus - get super duper crazy focused on that one thing. And then do it.

With love,
Jessica
